Open Claude Cowork
Download the Claude desktop app and click the button that selects Cowork. Cowork works with local files on your computer, so it fits well if you have Excel sheets sitting in a folder.
Generate mock data to practice on
Ask Claude to create fake receipts and sales records with the Faker library in Python. Ask for about one hundred entries each and let Claude pick the structure. Skip this step if you want to use your own files.

Check privacy before using real data
Mock data avoids privacy concerns. If you plan to use real business data in a regulated environment, contact the Anthropic sales team to set up zero days data retention first.
Review the generated data
Wait a few seconds while Claude works. Then check that it produced one hundred receipts and one hundred sales records.
Have Claude ask you questions
Instead of describing the dashboard yourself, ask Claude to interview you about the data visualization you need. This works the same on a folder of reports, Excel files or even images.

Pick the format, KPIs and filters
Answer Claude's questions. Choose an interactive HTML page, ask for two separate dashboards, and request KPIs, time series trends and filters. Expect generation to take a couple of minutes, depending on how big the data is.

Review the receipts dashboard
Open the receipts dashboard. Check the spend per store, spend by state, payment method breakdown and daily spend over time. The same approach works on sheets of one thousand to ten thousand rows.
Review the sales dashboard
Open the sales dashboard. Together, the two views show where money is being spent and where it is coming in. You can build the same kind of dashboard for marketing analytics.

Generating the dashboards takes a couple of minutes, because the interactive HTML dashboard is code. Bigger data takes longer.
The first build is the slow part. Once it exists, set it up so the dashboard updates each time you add more data instead of rebuilding from scratch.
