   Fable 5 was supposed to be sunset today. Anthropic gave it seven extra days instead. In my view the timing is no coincidence: three major AI releases landed the same week.

   Look at Grok 4.5

   SpaceX AI (SpaceX, xAI and the team from Cursor) released Grok 4.5. In my view, it matches Opus 4.7, is nearly on par with Opus 4.8, and costs about half as much as previous models. That makes SpaceX AI a serious contender next to OpenAI and Anthropic.

   Look at GPT 5.6

   OpenAI released GPT 5.6 in three forms: Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol, the flagship, is slightly behind Fable 5. I find both very good for coding quality and long-running tasks, even though they are very different models.

   Understand why Anthropic keeps Fable 5

   Without Fable 5, Anthropic would no longer have the best model on the market. Fable 5 is the most expensive to run and heavily subsidized, but it keeps Anthropic ahead. I expect removing it would push users to OpenAI or SpaceX.

   Check ChatGPT Work and the new limits

   OpenAI released ChatGPT Work, its equivalent of Claude Code Work. OpenAI also removed the five-hour limit on all plans, so only your weekly limit caps how much you build and automate. If you hit five-hour limits elsewhere, this is worth comparing.

   Plan for what comes after the week

   Nobody knows yet what happens next. I believe Fable 5 will stay in Anthropic's plans, possibly only in the Max plan ($100 to $200). Do not build workflows that depend on Fable 5 being on every plan.

   Keep an eye on the wider field

   I count three major players, plus Chinese labs such as Zhipu (GLM models), Minimax and Kimi. More competition means better results for you as an end user, so compare models for your own tasks.
