Design Systems for AI: The 2026 Guide
You will know why AI needs a design system rather than brand guidelines, have downloaded a ready-made design system (a single markdown file) from getdesign.md, and be ready to test it in Claude, Codex, Antigravity or Gemini.
What you need
A web browser to open getdesign.md
An AI tool you already use: Claude, Codex, Antigravity or Gemini
Step by step
See why brand guidelines fall short with AI
Brand guidelines are documents written for people: visual identity, typography, tone. An AI struggles to turn them into exact output. A screenshot of a website gives Claude only part of the information, so it cannot know details like the real size of the buttons, which live in the code.
Understand what a design system is
A design system is the same idea as a brand guideline, made for AI to read. It is a single markdown file: a plain text document that holds all of the brand information in a specific structure.
Know what the file holds
Expect the file to contain the brand's colors in the correct sequence, the size of the buttons and the letter spacing, written as text rather than only shown visually.
Open getdesign.md and browse
Open getdesign.md. Browse the design systems available by default. They are created and maintained by the community, based on popular brands such as Airtable, Airbnb, Binance, Cal.com, Claude and Clay.

Download a design system
Pick a design system for inspiration and click download for Claude Design. The file still works outside Claude Design: markdown files are flexible, so you can use it with Antigravity or Codex when you build websites.
Consider a private design.md for your brand
If you want a design system for a specific company, including your own, you can request a private design.md on the same website. It is a paid feature.
Check the preview
Open the design system's preview to see everything it contains: brand accents, surfaces, colors and text headlines. A coherent system is what lets you produce posts that look the same every time.
Test it in your AI tool
Give the downloaded file to the tool you use, whether that is Claude, Codex or Gemini, and test it on your own work.
Watch out for
Giving an AI only a screenshot of a site you want to copy gives a poor result, because the image misses information held in the code, such as button sizes.
Guidelines written for people (PDFs, visual documents) are hard for AI to interpret. Use a structured markdown design system instead.
Downloading 'for Claude Design' does not lock you in: the same markdown file works in Antigravity, Codex and other tools.
