ChatGPT vs Claude: Which AI Tool Should You Pick?

There is a buzz around Claude right now, with people calling it the best model ever. What you have to understand is that it is not winning because it is more intelligent; it is winning because of the tools and connectors built around it. In this walkthrough I go through every major feature of ChatGPT and Claude side by side, so you can pick the right tool for your personal or professional use.

1. Credit where credit is due: ChatGPT is not dead (0:30)

ChatGPT is far, far from dead, and we have to give OpenAI credit for something they do extremely well: being the pioneers when it comes to features. OpenAI is nearly always the first to ship a capability before anyone else in the market. Deep research, which builds extremely detailed reports by pulling information from the web and using the models' thinking capabilities, started at OpenAI. The live voice mode, where you talk to the AI in real time, was introduced by ChatGPT too. They put a feature out there, and if it does well, competitors tend to copy it.

2. ChatGPT as a Swiss knife for beginners (1:31)

If you are just getting into generative AI, ChatGPT is still a fantastic Swiss knife. It covers the basics of question and answer through the chat box, plus more advanced capabilities. Deep research mode can produce entire reports on sales, lead generation, marketing trends, even tutorials. Thinking mode helps it work through more complex problems. And you have image creation: sufficient for most use cases, including marketing, but not the best out there. The best image generation right now belongs to Gemini's Nano Banana Pro, quite frankly.

3. ChatGPT exclusives: Apps and the GPT Store (2:24)

Some things are specific to ChatGPT. The applications feature connects ChatGPT to tools you use every day: Airtable, the Adobe Suite, Canva, even Lovable. Claude has an equivalent under another name, but the principle stands.

Then there is Explore GPTs, the GPT Store, where people create custom GPTs for any use case and publish them. This is fantastic if you have no one handling customer support: you can create a live knowledge base where visitors talk to a chatbot that answers everything about your business.

ChatGPT also has Projects, which groups conversations together and lets you attach sources like PDF or Word documents. Every conversation inside the project refers back to those documents. And OpenAI ships Codex, aimed at developers but with fantastic business use cases. Where OpenAI underperforms is that they are not marketing Codex as a business product yet, something Anthropic does very well with Claude Code.

One more thing I genuinely love: the ChatGPT desktop application has an always-on window you can toggle with a keyboard shortcut. Whenever I have a quick question or need to translate something on the fly, I hit my keyboard and everything is right there. They have the best desktop application right now.

4. Claude: intelligence is not the bottleneck (4:51)

Now to Claude, made by Anthropic. Yes, it beats ChatGPT's model on benchmarks, but that is not the main point. Intelligence is no longer the bottleneck. OpenAI, Gemini, Grok, all of these models are extremely smart, smarter than me probably. What actually limits you is how well the tool connects to the real world: can I connect it to Excel, to PowerPoint, to my desktop? That is why, for business use cases, Claude is superior to ChatGPT.

5. Claude Chat: research, Drive, connectors and projects (6:02)

The main Claude window mirrors what you saw in ChatGPT. Research mode is the same thing as deep research and produces extremely dense reports on any topic. You can connect directly to your Google Drive, which also exists in ChatGPT but performs better here. And you have connectors, Claude's way of linking to other applications, which is a lot easier than in ChatGPT.

There are nice-to-have features too: the style selector changes how Claude replies, and you can create your own style if you enjoy a certain type of communication. The Projects tab works exactly like projects in ChatGPT: create a project, share files into it, and every new conversation inside knows those documents.

6. Artifacts: Claude's killer feature (7:59)

Artifacts are exclusive to Claude, and they can be even better than custom GPTs. An artifact is an application created by Claude that you can publish to the web and share with employees, friends, anyone. One of mine is a Claude Writing Assistant that improves any text I send it, an app with generative AI already inside it, built without a single line of code. You can create a CRM, a cover letter generator, even a quick game to decide who pays the next round at the bar. Anthropic was the first to push artifacts.

7. Customize: connectors, skills and plugins (9:32)

The Customize tab is probably what makes Claude the better tool. Inside it you select connectors to Gmail, Google Drive, Trello, or a database. Then come skills. A skill is simply the automation of a workflow. Quick example: if I clean data with Claude once, I can tell him this afterwards:

Hey, I'm going to clean more data afterwards. Can you save this as a skill?

From then on, every time I clean data, Claude references that exact skill and does the same thing time and time again. You can create skills conversationally with Create with Claude, or upload one. That means you can share skills with colleagues so anyone can work to your standard.

Plugins are an app store for skills: browse plugins for customer support, data, brand voices, or extremely specific tools like one database or the Google Mail suite. This ability to connect to the tools of the working world is what makes Claude the superior AI tool.

8. No native image generation? The HTML workaround (11:58)

Claude does not have native image generation. Does that mean you cannot create images with Claude? Absolutely not. I gave Claude a skill that creates visuals using HTML, the same thing used to build landing pages, and I download the result to use as images. Not photos, but visuals, and for a lot of business content that is exactly what you need.

9. Cowork and Claude Code: chat with hands (13:12)

Cowork is different from Claude Chat. It selects a folder on your computer and works with the data inside it, on top of connecting to the same tools as the chat. It is a chat version with hands: it can create an Excel file, build a report on your machine, do actual work in that folder.

Cowork is a simplified version of Claude Code, and Claude Code is the reason Claude is, for me, the superior tool. Everything you do on your computer is code by default. Sending a LinkedIn message is code. Clicking an application is code. Watching a video is code. So by interacting in plain English with Claude Code, you get far more done, and when you do not know how to connect the pieces, it walks you through it. These are true agents that can work 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, four hours if the task needs it. Best ROI of any AI tool out there for business impact.

Pitfalls and tips

• Do not pick a tool based on benchmark scores. Both models handle most cognitive tasks; connectivity decides the winner for your workflow.
• ChatGPT's image generation is fine for marketing, but if image quality is the priority, Nano Banana Pro on Gemini is the best model out there.
• Skills are how you keep quality consistent across a team: build once, share the skill, and everyone produces to the same standard.
