Know what the rumor says
Note the current signal: Claude Opus 5 has been spotted on Vertex, and several places hint at a release sooner rather than later. Treat it as a rumor until Anthropic ships it, and keep in mind the race is between Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX AI.
Mark the date Fable 5 goes away
Plan for Fable 5 leaving around July 19th (approximately). Once it is gone, GPT 5.6 Sol becomes the best model available, so any workflow you built on Fable 5 needs a replacement, either Opus 5 or an OpenAI model.
Apply the valley of death test
When Opus 5 benchmarks appear, place it on a line from Opus 4.8 to GPT 5.6 Sol. If it lands anywhere between the two, I call it a useless model: you are better off going to OpenAI, which gives you more usage and has not said it will take your model away.
Judge a result above GPT 5.6 Sol carefully
If Opus 5 beats GPT 5.6 Sol, count it as decent, not good. Many subscribers still want the best model included in what they pay for. Check whether Anthropic makes Fable 5 available to most people, or at least to everyone on the $100 plan.
Set realistic expectations
Do not expect Fable 5 level performance from Opus 5. Fable 5 is another type of model, not the same kind of brain as Opus, so that level is hard to reach. Also ask whether you can keep using the model long term, since people expect to use it forever.
Watch the competition in the same window
Keep an eye on OpenAI, which may release a new model around the same time as Opus 5. Also track GLM (the open source model from Zhipu) and xAI, which are trailing right behind the Opus family. Beating Opus 4.8 is not enough: Opus 5 must beat GPT 5.6 Sol by a big margin.
Plan for several good models, not one
Expect an era with no single best model, where several providers each have strong options. Keep your workflows able to switch between Claude and ChatGPT instead of locking into one.
