ChatGPT to Claude: Transfer Your Memory in 5 Minutes
Switching from ChatGPT to Claude usually means starting from zero: the new assistant knows nothing about you. In this walkthrough I show you how to migrate your memory and personalization data from ChatGPT into Claude step by step, in about five minutes, using Claude's built-in import feature. The same flow works for any other AI provider, including Perplexity and Gemini.
What you need
- A Claude account
- A ChatGPT account with personalization and memory enabled
- About five minutes, a bit more if you have years of ChatGPT history
1. Set up Claude's memory settings (0:08)
Head into the Claude application and click on your profile in the bottom left corner, then go to Settings. From there, open the Capabilities tab. This is where everything related to personalizing your Claude experience lives.
Profile > Settings > Capabilities > Memory
The first thing you see on this tab is the Memory option: everything Claude remembers from what you have told him. Make sure both memory toggles are on. If you are a new user you will have nothing here yet. For this tutorial I actually deleted all of my history so I could start from zero. If you already have an existing memory file, that is not a problem either: you can still import the remaining things from your ChatGPT conversations on top of it.
2. Start the import and copy the extraction prompt (1:00)
The option we want is called Import memory from other AI providers. Click Start import. A window opens with a huge prompt that you need to copy. That prompt is our extractor: it is what will pull the memories out of ChatGPT, or out of any other provider you use.
Settings > Capabilities > Import memory from other AI providers > Start import
Copy the prompt and keep it ready. Now we move to the other side.
3. Turn on ChatGPT's personalization (1:18)
Open the ChatGPT application, go to your profile, and click Personalization. Scroll all the way down until you reach the Memory option. Memory in ChatGPT works exactly the same way it does in Claude: it references slices of past conversations. You can browse every memory ChatGPT has about you right there. In my case it is mostly a lot of books.
Make sure both memory toggles are on. This is critical: if they are off, what we do next will absolutely not work.
4. Paste the extraction prompt in ChatGPT (2:12)
Go back to the ChatGPT homepage and paste the prompt you copied from Claude. In plain terms, that prompt tells ChatGPT: take everything you remember about me and output it in this new format so I can copy it.
5. Pro tips: thinking mode and model selection (2:38)
Before you hit send, two things improve your results a lot:
1. Select the thinking mode
2. Pick the bigger model available on your plan
With thinking mode on, you are far more likely to get all of your data out instead of just slices of it. And if you are on the pro plan or any other paid plan, choose the larger of the two models. In my case I am on ChatGPT Standard; you can use ChatGPT Plus.
6. Run the extraction (3:01)
Send the prompt and let ChatGPT collect everything. If you have been using ChatGPT for months or years, it is normal for this to take a couple of minutes. For me it took about 30 seconds to a minute at most.
One important expectation to set: with a long history, you probably will not get everything out in one pass. You will have to run the prompt several times, realistically two to three times. When the output arrives, that is everything ChatGPT remembers about you, formatted and ready. Copy all of it.
7. Paste the memory into Claude and verify (3:47)
Back in Claude, paste the block you copied and click Add to Memory. Because there is a lot of information to process, this can take a while too. Two to three minutes is normal; mine took about 30 seconds.
When it finishes, Claude has taken everything I gave him from ChatGPT and created a new memory file, migrated from ChatGPT into Claude. Open your memory settings and check it: all the context from my ChatGPT discussions is now in Claude, nothing lost.
8. What transfers, what does not, and other providers (4:40)
One key thing you need to know: there is no way to bring your chat history from ChatGPT into Claude. The conversations themselves stay in the ChatGPT application. That is not really a problem, because the heart of everything ChatGPT knows about you now lives in Claude.
And this is not a ChatGPT-only trick. You can run the same extraction prompt against any other AI provider, such as Perplexity or Gemini, and import the result the exact same way.
Pitfalls and tips
- Both memory toggles must be on in ChatGPT before you paste the extraction prompt, otherwise the export fails.
- Long ChatGPT histories rarely export in one shot. Plan on running the prompt two to three times.
- Use thinking mode for the extraction. It is the difference between full data and fragments.
- Do not panic if the import sits for a few minutes on either side. Processing that much text takes time.
