GPT 5.6 Drops Tomorrow: Everything We Know
Tomorrow OpenAI ships GPT 5.6, and for the first time we are getting three variants of the same model on day one. I pulled together everything people are saying on X so you know what to expect before you touch it. By the end of this walkthrough you will know where GPT 5.6 stands against Fable 5, and the exact plan I am using to combine both models during the week we have them side by side.
1. GPT 5.6 drops tomorrow (0:00)
What I did was gather all of the information running around on X to tell you what people really think about this model before it lands. This is not speculation from a press release. It is the aggregate of what early users are actually reporting.
2. Sol, Terra, Luna: the three variants (0:20)
The first thing to understand is that tomorrow we are getting three different variants of the same model. Sol is the flagship, the one you are going to be using most of the time. Terra is the middle ground. Luna is the smallest of the three. This is one of the first times OpenAI has ever shipped three variants of the same model at once, so picking the right tier for the right job becomes part of the workflow from day one.
3. Early government access and the backlash (0:52)
The model was released a week or two beforehand to government parties in the US, which caused a lot of backlash from general users. There was also criticism from some testers who said the model is almost too agentic, following instructions too narrowly. Honestly, that does not sound like a real problem to me. A model that sticks tightly to instructions is exactly what you want for execution work.
4. A huge leap in agentic coding (1:16)
The overall consensus is that GPT 5.6 is a huge leap in agentic coding and computer use. What does that mean for you? It is a model capable of doing long-running, complex tasks without losing its ground. This has been the standard for the GPT family: they are simply better at actual execution compared to the Anthropic models.
5. How GPT 5.6 and Fable 5 complement each other (1:41)
It is still not clear whether GPT 5.6 beats Fable 5 outright. What it looks like is that they complement each other quite nicely. From the early reports, GPT 5.6 is clearly better than Opus 4.8 but not as good as Fable 5, so it lands in a middle ground between the two. We get less than one week where both Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 are available together, and that overlap is the window to figure out how they fit.
6. The old GPT weakness: UX and UI design (2:47)
One of the biggest problems with the GPT model family has always been that they are bad at UX and UI design. They create horrible dashboards, and you can recognize their websites instantly. Apparently this has been fixed for this release. That is the single most interesting claim to verify yourself: does this model actually have better taste than the GPT 5.5 family?
7. My plan for running both models this week (3:22)
Here is how I see the coming week. We get access to both Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 at the same time, but the problem with Fable 5 is that usage is very limited even on the $100 to $200 plans. So instead of choosing one, I am going to have Fable 5 use GPT 5.6 as an agent, and I will show that setup in an upcoming video.
8. Combining them: Fable 5 orchestrates, GPT 5.6 executes (3:48)
The division of labor is simple. Fable 5 is absolutely monstrous at designing systems and understanding architectures, it has incredibly good taste, it creates fantastic UX, and it is incredibly powerful for 3D design. GPT 5.6 is better at long-running tasks, and for the amount of money you are paying it is the better bang for your buck. So Fable 5 becomes the orchestrator and the designer, and GPT 5.6 becomes the executor.
9. Why it wins for business and agentic work (4:39)
GPT 5.6, along with Codex, is going to be a fantastic tool for business use cases. Everything agentic, everything that does not require a lot of taste, admin work, pure execution, moving data from A to B, making sure everything is correct: GPT 5.6 looks like the way to go for all of it.
10. How to actually test if it is better (5:04)
Do not take Twitter's word for it. The way to know whether a new model is superior to its previous version is to test it on exactly what the previous version was bad at. For GPT 5.6, that means creating a lot of websites, dashboards, and visual assets with it. That is where GPT 5.5 fell down, so that is where a real step up or step down will show. Everyone on X says they are happy with the model, but we will only know once we use it ourselves starting tomorrow.
Where to go next
