Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: What's the Difference?
Claude Cowork and Claude Code can feel like the same product, right up until one of them refuses to leave its folder. This is one of the questions that comes up the most whenever I talk with people, mainly because Anthropic ships so many features and products. In this walkthrough I put both side by side so you understand exactly what each one can and cannot do, and which one you should be using.
What you need
- The Claude desktop application (for Claude Cowork)
- Claude Code installed on your computer
- Optionally, an API key for an outside service you want to test the connection with
1. Claude Cowork lives inside a box (0:15)
The thing to actually get in your head is that Claude Cowork is something that lives inside of a box. It is a sandbox environment. If I am working on a project A folder, it will not have access naturally to project B. Cowork is pretty much a Claude Code that has limitations: it is locked inside a single directory, and that lock shapes everything else about it.
2. Claude Code lives on your computer (0:44)
Claude Code, on the other hand, is something you really install inside of your computer. It has access to everything, if you wish it to. I can be in my Downloads folder and ask it to get information from the Desktop. On top of that, Claude Code can communicate with applications that are not connected through the usual connectors you see on Claude. It is the more advanced tool of the two.
3. Demo: Cowork cannot leave its folder (1:30)
In the Claude desktop application, I switch my model to Opus 5 on high. When you open Cowork you have to select a folder to work on, and I pick my usual Workspace folder where all of my work lives. That means I do not have access to any other folder by default. To prove it, I send this:
Hey Claude, can you please open the Downloads folder for me? Just tell me what's inside there.
Cowork creates a task, realizes Downloads is not inside the Workspace folder, and asks me to add the folder to the project. I can click Add Folder and grant the permission, and then both Downloads and Workspace show up in the context panel on the right. But by default, it simply does not have access. That is one of the main key differences.
4. The TheirStack test: connecting outside apps (2:47)
Next I test an application that is outside my connectors. You can check your own connectors in the Connectors tab of the Claude app. I use TheirStack, a fantastic application if you are looking for a job, and it is connected in my Workspace folder through an API key. So I ask Cowork:
TheirStack is connected on this workspace through an API key. Can you please use that API key to check how many credits are remaining in my account?
It tries everything and does not manage to do it. The answer comes back: we are running in a sandbox environment, I cannot do that. That is the key difference between Claude Code and Claude Cowork in one message.
5. What Cowork is still great for (3:47)
Cowork is fantastic for anything that is only going to reach you. If you want to build a custom application for yourself, a CRM, or an app that helps you with marketing, you can one hundred percent build that. Even more so with the Artifacts feature, which now lets you connect to real-time data. The sandbox is a limitation, but it is also what makes Cowork safe and simple.
6. Claude Code: Git, any folder, any API key (4:39)
Claude Code has the native capability of working with Git. Git is for developers, but really it is just software that gives you versions of the things you do: update a client's marketing campaigns and you get a new version of that work, tracked efficiently.
From the same folder as before, I run the mirror test:
Hey Claude, what's inside of my Downloads folder, please? Don't name any application, just tell me how many gigabytes of data are in there.
Claude Code goes ahead and checks without asking for any permission. This matters because we humans are unorganized and our information is scattered everywhere. If Cowork notices information is missing, it will not go looking for it across your computer. Claude Code will search your computer or your Google Drive without asking, if you configure it that way.
Then I retake the TheirStack example. An API key is just a fancy way of connecting your account to an application without using your login credentials:
There's a TheirStack API key inside of this workspace. Can you tell me how many credits are remaining? I just want how many credits are remaining inside of that account. Don't show me anything else.
While it works, note that both Claude Code and Claude Cowork let you send a message, leave the session, and go ask another thing. They work in parallel, and that is such a time saver. When the answer comes back, I see I have zero API credits remaining, fetched from an application that has no connector in the Claude app.
7. Subagents vs dynamic workflows (7:26)
Claude Cowork has subagents, which help it break tasks into smaller tasks. To use them, ask explicitly:
Hey Claude, can you please search for the latest news on AI in France and Germany, and please use two subagents for this.
Cowork spins up exactly two subagents, one for the French market and one for Germany. Mastering subagents is extremely important if you want to do extreme amounts of data analysis on a CRM, a YouTube channel, or anything like that.
Claude Code is different. It has agents of predetermined types, with names like general use, scan, and explore, and on top of that it has dynamic workflows. A dynamic workflow is Claude Code creating custom subagents for the task you asked. That makes dynamic workflows extremely powerful compared to subagents: market research, creating applications, overhauling UIs for business use cases, analyzing CRMs and marketing campaign data, all of it.
8. Avoid vendor lock-in (10:02)
It is extremely important to switch to Claude Code as soon as possible, because all the work you do with Claude Code really belongs to you. Migrating from Claude Code to other AI applications such as Codex, OpenCode, or any other agentic tool out there is super simple. Coming from Claude Cowork, it is a lot more difficult. And as these AI application creators, Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini and the rest, start charging more for their services at some point, avoiding vendor lock-in matters more than ever. Do not worry: if you start using Claude Code, you can always migrate to another service.
9. Recap: which one should you use? (10:55)
If you remember one single thing: Claude Code is really a free agent that roams your computer and has complete control over everything you ask it to do. Claude Cowork is Claude Code's little brother, literally a Claude Code in disguise with fewer features, made safer for people who just want to use it.
Pitfalls and tips
- Cowork will refuse anything that leaves its sandbox. Adding folders per project is the workaround, not a bug.
- If you want Cowork to use subagents reliably, tell it explicitly. It uses them by default sometimes, but being explicit is what triggers them.
- Send a message and leave the session: both tools keep working in parallel while you do something else.
