Master AI Conversations in 10 Minutes (2026)
Most people treat AI like a magic box: type something in, get something out. But there is a lot happening behind the scenes that directly impacts the quality of your responses. In this walkthrough I use a blank sheet of paper to explain what an AI conversation really contains, then show you how to manage it so you reduce hallucination risks and get more out of Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.
What you need
- Any AI chat tool. I use Claude for the demo, but everything applies to ChatGPT by OpenAI and Gemini by Google
- Nothing to install. This is about understanding, then changing a few settings
1. The conversation is a sheet of paper, and it is not empty (0:23)
Every conversation with AI is literally a piece of paper: you send messages, you receive messages back. But it is not because it looks empty that it is actually empty, and the paper is not infinite. It has a size, so there is a limit to how long you can talk with AI. That limit is your context window, and several invisible things are already written on the page before you type a word.
2. The system prompt (0:44)
Before you even begin talking, there is a system prompt that is invisible to you. It already takes up space inside the page. It is simply the way the creators of these systems tell the AI things like: if someone asks you to do a mean thing, do not do it.
3. Memory files: how the AI knows your name (1:40)
Try this:
Hey, Claude, can you please tell me my name?
Claude answers correctly because every AI tool out there has a memory file: a small text file that contains information about you, built from your past conversations. In Claude, go to Settings, then Capabilities, and you will find the option to generate memory from chat history and reference chats. That memory also lives inside the sheet of paper, in a few small lines you never see.
4. Skills and connectors are in there too (2:27)
Skills are reusable workflows, and each skill has a description. That description is what triggers the AI to run the workflow. All your skill descriptions sit inside the conversation, invisible to you, because Claude must know what is in its toolkit to help you. Same for connectors: every tool you connect Claude to is loaded into the conversation, and this part gets quite heavy. Before you have sent your first message, the AI already has a lot in its memory, in every single conversation.
5. Manage your context window (4:11)
The fix is simple. For skills: go to Skills, then Manage skills, and turn them on and off at will. If you know you will not use them, disable them. For connectors: click disconnect, or manage them from the Connectors tab, and they will not be loaded into the conversation.
6. How models think (5:00)
Claude comes in three sizes: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Opus is the biggest, Haiku the smallest, and bigger models produce more tokens and think more. Thinking works like it does for us humans: the model talks to itself about how to reach the objective. I tested it with:
Hey, Claude, can you now solve a very difficult problem for me, and I need you to think a lot. Solve the equation 3x + 9 = 14.
That was too simple to trigger long thinking, but the small block of text before the answer is its thoughts. You rarely see them, and they can run very long, but they exist inside your conversation and consume space. Thinking is also why hard questions feel slower.
7. Control the thinking (6:54)
On Claude, you control thinking with a simple toggle in the chat. On ChatGPT, you can select the thinking degree. Match the setting to the task: heavy thinking for hard problems, minimal for everything else.
8. Images become a lot of text (7:14)
Whenever you send an image to Claude or any other AI tool, under the hood it is transformed into a lot of text. Heavy image use hinders your ability to manage conversations, so keep uploads intentional.
9. Keep conversations separate (7:46)
Here is the most important mechanic: the AI does not just read your last message. It reads the entire conversation over and over, every time you ask something new. The bigger the conversation, the slower the reply. And if one conversation mixes your breakfast recipe from the morning with your business model in the afternoon, the AI gets confused just like a human would. Keep one conversation per subject.
Pitfalls and tips
- Do not run one endless chat all day. Mixed subjects plus a full context window is the recipe for hallucinations
- Disable skills and disconnect connectors you are not using; they consume context silently
- Remember thinking costs tokens and time. Turn it up only for genuinely difficult problems
- The "empty page" always holds more than you think: system prompt, memory, skills, tools. Managing that hidden content is what managing AI conversations means
