Claude Fable 5 Is Here to Stay - Maximize Your Usage
You will set up Claude so Fable 5 plans and checks the work while Opus 4.8 subagents do the tasks, using a CLAUDE.md file. You will also run a quick test to confirm the subagents run on Opus, so your Fable 5 allowance lasts much longer.
Was Sie brauchen
A Claude Max plan (5x or 20x) with access to Fable 5
Claude Cowork or Claude Code (the steps are the same in both)
One project folder to work in
Schritt für Schritt
Know your real Fable 5 budget
Fable 5 only gets 50% of the weekly usage allowance, so a 20x plan acts like 10x and a 5x plan like 2.5x. Fable 5 also uses credits twice as fast as Opus 4.8. In total, you get about a quarter of the usage you would get with Opus 4.8.
Pick the right job for each model
Don't use Fable 5 for busy work. Use it to plan and verify (the delegator). Give the busy work to Opus 4.8, the model you get 100% of the usage for: reading text, writing, fixing and any other tasks.
Open a project in Cowork or Claude Code
Open Claude Cowork (or Claude Code) and select the project you will work in. I recommend keeping one personal workspace and staying in a single folder. For this walkthrough I open a new test project.
Check for an existing CLAUDE.md
Ask Claude whether the folder already has a CLAUDE.md file. This file holds the extra instructions Claude follows, and it can point Claude to your CRM, folders or content tools. A new project won't have one yet.
Check for a CLAUDE.md fileHey Claude, is there a particular claude.md file inside of this workspace and this folder where we're working on?
Create the orchestrator and verifier rules
Ask Claude to create a new CLAUDE.md file with this way of working. Make sure it says Opus 4.8 subagents, not Fable 5 subagents. Wait while Claude writes the file.
Create the CLAUDE.md fileI want to create a new claude.md file. I want you to add the following mode of operation: whenever I give you very complex tasks or very long tasks, I want you to break them up into sub-tasks, and then you will delegate those to your Opus 4.8 subagents. That's extremely crucial. Not Fable 5 subagents, but Opus 4.8 subagents. On top of that, you will work as the orchestrator and also the verifier. So you will orchestrate all of those subagents, and then you will verify that what they did was actually correct. The idea is we want to maximize Fable 5 usage.
Review the new CLAUDE.md
Open the new file and check that it describes the orchestrator and verifier mode: break the work into parts, hand them to Opus subagents, coordinate them, then verify. If you know how you work, explain it to Claude so the file fits you.
Test it with three subagents
Give Claude a small task that splits cleanly into three parts. Claude should start creating subagents with its tools.
Test promptCan you just run a quick test for me? I want you to conduct research on the latest AI news in France, Spain, and Germany using three different subagents so that we see that all of this is working correctly.
Confirm the subagents run on Opus
Look at the running subagents and check that each one shows Opus. If they do, the busy work is using your full Opus 4.8 allowance, and Fable 5 is only planning and checking.
Worauf Sie achten sollten
If you use Fable 5 for everything, from replying to emails to building apps, you won't make it to the end of the month on the $100 or $200 plan.
Name Opus 4.8 subagents in your instructions. If you don't, Claude may start Fable 5 subagents and use up your smaller allowance.
The Claude chat app makes custom instructions like these hard to set (only through the Settings tab). Use Cowork or Claude Code instead.
