Fable 5 Gets 7 More Days: Here’s Why
Claude Fable 5 was supposed to be sunset today, and instead it gets to live for another seven days. That timing is no coincidence. In this breakdown I connect the three major AI news of the week, Grok 4.5, GPT 5.6, and ChatGPT Work, and explain why Fable 5 has quietly become the one thing keeping Anthropic ahead in this race.
1. Why Fable 5 got another seven days (0:00)
This week we did not get one but three major AI news and releases. Fable 5 had been released with a sunset date that landed today, and then Anthropic extended it by seven days. To understand why, you have to look at what everyone else shipped in the same window.
2. Grok 4.5 challenges Anthropic and OpenAI (0:29)
First, SpaceX AI, which is the combination of SpaceX, xAI, and also the people from Cursor, released a new model called Grok 4.5. It matches the quality of Opus 4.7 and is nearly on par with Opus 4.8, and they did it at literally half the cost of the previous models, which is mind-boggling good. SpaceX AI is now a serious contender in the AI race, standing side by side with OpenAI and Anthropic.
3. GPT 5.6 enters the AI model race (1:12)
On the other side, OpenAI had the major release of their latest model, GPT 5.6, in the forms Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol, the flagship, is slightly behind Fable 5 in terms of performance. They are very different models, but for coding quality and long-running tasks, both are extremely good.
4. Why Anthropic needs Fable 5 (1:38)
Put those two launches together and the math is simple: if Anthropic takes away Fable 5, they no longer have the best model in the market, period. And yet Fable 5 is the most expensive model to run, it is heavily subsidized, and there are a lot of restrictions around it. It is now the only thing keeping Anthropic ahead in this AI race. Just like in cars, Anthropic just realized that things in the mirror might be closer than they appear.
5. ChatGPT Work and OpenAI's limit change (2:36)
OpenAI did not stop at a model. They also released ChatGPT Work, the equivalent of Claude Cowork but for ChatGPT, and they still hold the biggest name and the biggest brand. On top of that, they removed the five-hour limit that used to exist on all of their plans. Now the only thing holding you back from building applications and automating workflows is your weekly limit, which is insane. OpenAI is now the only player in their class with no five-hour limit. It is a very tough spot for Anthropic.
6. What happens to Fable 5 next (3:21)
I do firmly believe Fable 5 is not going away, mainly because by now it is a major competitive advantage, and removing it would cause massive churn toward OpenAI or SpaceX. My guess is that Fable 5 stays in the Anthropic lineup, maybe only on the Max plan, the $100 to $200 tier. That part we still have to figure out.
7. Why more AI competition benefits everyone (3:37)
Everything going on here is extremely beneficial for us end users. We no longer have one major player; we have three, and more if you count the Chinese companies: Zhipu with the GLM models, Minimax, or Kimi. That is a healthy ecosystem that fosters innovation and helps us get better results out of the models these labs are building.
8. Enjoy the extra week of Fable 5 (4:05)
So go ahead and enjoy one extra week of Fable 5. At the time of recording, Anthropic still had not given us a usage reset, but I am fairly confident they will, just like last time, because people are buying subscriptions and aligning all of their usage to match those deadlines. Throughout the week I will be showing what you can really do with all of these AI tools, for personal use, for business, or for anything else that comes to mind.
Tips for the extension week
- If you aligned your usage cycles to the original sunset date, watch for a usage reset. It had not arrived at recording time, but it happened last time.
- Treat the extra week as testing time: push Fable 5 on your real workloads while it is still available to you, and compare it against GPT 5.6 Sol and Grok 4.5 where you can.
