How to Build Your First Claude Skill

   Pick a workflow you repeat daily

   List the things you do multiple times a day (updating your CRM, checking emails, searching for information online). Each one is a reusable workflow, and a skill is a standardized way for AI to repeat it. Everything here also applies to ChatGPT.

   Know what a skill contains

   A skill is a mega prompt sent the same way every time: - Description: tells Claude when to trigger the skill. - SKILL.md: a Markdown file holding the instructions. - Optional toolkit: visual assets, examples, templates and, for advanced skills, scripts.

   You do not have to write any of this yourself.

   Do the task once with Claude

   Open Claude and run the task one time, exactly as you normally would. In the video, I ask for a single web search on trending AI topics.

   Ask Claude to turn it into a skill

   In the same chat, ask Claude to make a skill out of what you just did. Claude uses its built-in skill creator skill whenever you ask it to create or modify a skill.

   Review the finished skill

   Open the output. The skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file. Check the description (when Claude should use it, for example whenever you ask for a web search on trending AI topics) and the instructions that tell Claude step by step what to do.

   Save it and manage your skills

   Click the save button on the skill. Then go to Manage to see all your skills. Click any skill to read its files. Compare your simple one-file skill with the skill creator, which also includes assets, agents and more.

   Find your next skill

   Open your Claude account, check out the skill creator, and ask Claude to suggest what else you could turn into a skill.
