Stop Ignoring Open Source AI
You will understand what open-source, open-weight models like GLM 5.2 by Z.ai are, why running them on your own hardware keeps your data private, and how GLM 5.2 compares with the top closed models on the benchmarks I show.
Was Sie brauchen
No setup needed to follow along
Optional: a powerful enough computer or server if you later want to run an open-source model yourself
Schritt für Schritt
Meet GLM 5.2 by Z.ai
Know what this video covers: GLM 5.2, a new open-source AI model released by Z.ai. I use it as an example of how fast open-source AI is moving.

Tell open source from closed source
Remember the difference. A closed-source model is only available from the company that built it. An open-source model is available to any company: if your computer is powerful enough, you can download it and run it on your own machine.
See why local means private
Run the model on your own computer and your data never leaves it, so there are no data privacy issues. Note that these models are also open weight: you can look inside the model to see how its parameters are configured. That gives you sovereignty over your data, whether you are in the US or in Europe.
Read the benchmark chart
Look at the published benchmarks comparing GLM 5.2 with the current leaders, Opus 4.8 and Fable 5. GLM 5.2 still lags behind, ranking about fourth to fifth overall.
Weigh the hardware gap
Put that ranking in context. The US has Nvidia; Chinese labs train on Huawei chips, which are less performant. Reaching the top five of the top ten models on weaker hardware is a big result.
Compare across other benchmarks
Check the other benchmarks: GLM and other Chinese models such as Kimi K2 land in the top five quite consistently, rivaling Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's models.

Plan for open source catching up
Expect open-source models to close the gap within months. I predict open models with the same capabilities as Fable 5 before the end of the year. If you already own capable computers, or are willing to buy servers, you could run your own instances.
Worauf Sie achten sollten
Running an open-source model locally needs a powerful enough computer; an ordinary laptop may not be enough.
GLM 5.2 still trails Opus 4.8 and Fable 5 overall (about fourth to fifth place), so do not expect frontier results on every task yet.
The prediction that open models will match Fable 5 this year is my own bold statement, not a guarantee.
