Design Systems for AI: The 2026 Guide
Brand guidelines were built for humans, and AI does a poor job of reading them. In this guide I break down the difference between traditional brand guidelines and AI-ready design systems: single Markdown files that describe your colors, typography, spacing, and brand feel in a way tools can actually reuse. By the end you will know where to find community design systems and how to apply them in Claude, Codex, Antigravity, or Gemini for consistent output every time.
What you need
- Any AI tool you create with: Claude, Codex, Antigravity, or Gemini all work
- Five minutes on getdesign.md to pick a design system for testing
- No design skills required. The whole point is encoding them once
1. What brand guidelines were built for (0:17)
In the old world, we only had brand guidelines. They are documents stating how a company should look: the branding, the visual identity, the typography, the tone of communication. They tell people how to communicate whenever they create something for that brand. They were completely meant for human consumption, and that is exactly the problem now.
2. Why screenshots and visual docs fail with AI (0:45)
Here is a clear example. If you give Claude just a screenshot of a website you want to copy, it will do a very poor job. The image only encloses part of the information you need for a one hundred percent identical copy. Everything related to the actual size of the buttons, for instance, is information enclosed inside the code, not the pixels. Visual documents lose the precision AI needs.
3. Design systems: brand guidelines meant for AI (1:16)
A design system is the same thing as a brand guideline, but meant for AI consumption. It is a single Markdown file, which is just a text document, containing all the brand information in a very specific structure: all the colors with the correct color values, the size of the buttons, the letter spacing, everything described in text rather than only visually. Text is what AI reads natively, so nothing gets lost in translation.
4. Find community design systems on getdesign.md (2:02)
Because of this shift, websites have started to appear around design systems. getdesign.md gives you access to a lot of community-created and community-maintained design systems for the most popular brands out there: Airtable, Airbnb, Binance, Cal.com, Claude, Clay, and more. If you need a design system for inspiration, come here and click download for Claude Design.
Do not let the button name fool you: downloading it for Claude Design does not mean you can only use it there. These Markdown files are extremely flexible. If you develop your websites with tools like Antigravity or Codex, you can absolutely use the same file. There is also a paid feature on the site, privatedesign.md, if you want a design system built for a specific company, including your own.
5. What a coherent design system produces (2:50)
To show what this unlocks, I created a brand with a precise typology, precise coloring, and a precise feel to it. Because the system itself is coherent, I get replicable posts each and every single time. That is the real payoff: not one good-looking asset, but a repeatable brand where every new asset matches the last one.
6. What a design system preview contains (3:12)
Back on getdesign.md, each design system has a preview showing everything it contains: the brand accents, the surfaces, the colors, the text headlines. Everything you would ever need to reproduce the brand is spelled out explicitly, which is exactly why AI tools can follow it.
7. Your next step (3:29)
Go to getdesign.md, download one design system for yourself, and test it out with any tool: Claude, Codex, Gemini, anything. In the next video I show how to actually use a design system inside Claude Design to build social media posts, landing pages, and everything else you might need.
Pitfalls and tips
- Do not feed AI screenshots and hope for a faithful copy. The critical details, like exact button sizes, live in code and text, not in the image
- A design system is only as good as its coherence. If the file is precise and consistent, your outputs will be too
- Community systems are for inspiration and practice. For real client work, encode the actual brand rather than borrowing someone else's
- One file, many tools. Keep a single Markdown design system and reuse it across Claude, Codex, Antigravity, and Gemini instead of re-explaining your brand per tool
